Summary:

In order to combat the biodiversity crisis, nature conversation should become more normalized. Indigenous leadership is a crucial aspect in making sure that this can occur. Canada is no stranger to taking conservation action and priortizing the protection of nature, but still many Canadian species are in decline. Canada’s efforts to proect natural areas have resulted in many Indigenous people of their land. Indigenous communities have been left out of Canada’s conversation about nature conservation despite being highly knowledgeable on this topic. Indigenous people have lived sustainably through their diverse knowledge and understadning of nature. Their knowledge and culture has been shaped through their relationship with land and has been passed through stories and language. Indigenous knowledge systems must play a central role for Canada’s nature conservation efforts to be successful.
