Summary:

US only diverts 34% of its waste from landfills. San Francisco diverts 80% of its waste from landfills. New York only diverts 21% of its waste, and Chicago diverts only 10%. San Francisco made recycling and composting mandatory in 2009 and banned items like styrofoam containers and plastic grocery bags. Trash collection cost rates were also made much higher than recycling and composting rates. Businesses are fined if foodwaste is not disposed of in proper bins. The city only works with one waste management company to insure that thier sustainability values can align.
