Summary:

The lithium ion batteries used in electric vehicles cannot be recycled the same as gas-powered vehicles. Lithium-opn batteries are heavier and contain hundreds of lithium ion cells which all need to be dismantled. These batteries contain hazardous material and can expload if not disassembled properly. Proposals from the European union have sought out to make electric vehicles manufacturers responsible for making sure these batteries are disposed of incorrectly at the end of their life. Nissan is reusing old lithium batteries to make automated vehicles which help in their factories. Many companies have found ways to recycle parts of the battery and to re-mine its contents so they can make use of it again.
